Every day at the office - typically somewhere between the morning performance review, the file cabinet explosion and the gridlock commute - there is a moment that makes you wonder why you don't live on an island and/or question whether you should start spiking your coffee. The truth is that sometimes, with the weight of the nine to five on our shoulders, we can take ourselves too seriously. Don't get me wrong, I am a complete believer in the five year plan, the PhD and the power skirt but it's important to take a step back and remember that life exists outside of your occupation. A wealth of dimension lives within you and, in order to have a healthy career and a well balanced life, it is essential to spread that wealth beyond the walls of your cubicle.
One of the best ways to achieve this health and balance is simply to laugh... allow yourself to experience those funny moments throughout the day and choose to smile instead of getting frustrated or mumbling 'this is not what I went to school for' under your breath. Lightening up will give you the freedom to enjoy your work instead of viewing it as a race to the top of the ladder. Plus, I'm a firm believer that true talent and dedication will always shine through.
If you need a bit of practice in considering the lighter side, take a cue from The Office, hilarious excerpts from which are included below.
Here's to laughing our way to the top.
